Thornbury Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc wins Gold in London tasting
The Thornbury winemaking team are delighted to have been awarded a Gold medal for the Thornbury Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008 at the 26th International Wine Challenge 2009 in London - one of the world’s most prestigious and influential independent wine competitions.
Wines submitted for judgement came from a record 41 countries but only four Gold medals for NZ Sauvignon Blanc were awarded.
Commenting on the Thornbury Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008, judges said: "Grapefruit and asparagus nose. Very interesting, clean palate of nettles and gooseberry with a long finish, that's mineral and fruity."
Fruit for Thornbury’s gold-medal winning Sauvignon Blanc was sourced from vineyards located in the Awatere, Wairau and Waihopai Valleys of Marlborough. Timely canopy management along with attention to vine health, helped to optimise ideal flavours at harvest. Fruit was de-stemmed, gently pressed with a portion given extended skin contact to extract pungent varietal aromas. The juice was cool fermented with selected yeasts to maximise and retain as much varietal flavour and aroma as possible. Lees aging has helped develop the palate weight and further enhanced the intensity and structure of this wine.
