"How does a $20 Merlot top the Cuisine Tasting?" This is the question posed by Cuisine Magazine in their September/October issue in response to the 2004 Thornbury Merlot fighting off its more pricey peers to take out top honours in a tasting of the nation’s finest Merlots. The answer, Michael Cooper and his panel of judges explain, is that it is a "pure expression of the Merlot varietal." For the team here at Thornbury Wines, it is simply a reflection of what we aim for with every wine we release - a wine that gives pleasure –that celebrates life.
Thornbury’s philosophy is to match the very best of New Zealand's wine regions with the best varieties to create wines that are distinctive and memorable. This winning wine is no exception. The 2004 Merlot was crafted from fruit grown in the Hawkes Bay’s prestigious Gimblett Gravels region which is rapidly developing an international reputation for classic, full bodied red wines.
Awarding Thornbury a 5 star rating for this Merlot, the judges described
it as, "a wonderful buy, impressively dark, full-bodied and generous, with a strong surge of plummy, spicy flavours, a hint of herbs and lovely overall harmony… If you are a Merlot fan – or just appreciate great-value reds- don’t miss it."
